Maintaining Domestic Air Conditioning at Your Home in UK

The installation of domestic air conditioning in the UK has become a must have for the hot summer months.

If you have recently installed an air conditioning unit, it is of utmost importance that you maintain your unit so that it can perform at its best.  Did you know that some parts of an AC unit including, filters, coils, and fins, require proper maintenance for them to function correctly. Neglecting any necessary maintenance can result in substantial repair bills later on, as well as a shorter lifespan of the unit.

After your domestic air conditioning installation, you will need to perform regular maintenance checks.

Here’s a guide to maintaining a split air conditioning system.

Air Conditioner Filters

Filters should be your top priority. Dirt and debris will slowly start to collect on your AC’s air filters. Not cleaning them regularly can cause that dust to escape into your room and cause health issues. This kind of leakage can degrade air quality and cause severe issues for someone with dust allergy or asthma. Moreover, clogged filters can reduce airflow and system efficiency, ultimately causing your system to malfunction, a costly situation that most people would not welcome.

Air Conditioner Coils

The evaporator and condenser coil can collect dirt from the filters over time, which is why it is so important to clean your filters at regular intervals to avoid this.  However,  despite best efforts, the coils will still collect a certain amount of dirt. This dirt causes a film around the evaporator coil to form, making it difficult for the coil to absorb heat and reducing the airflow. The outdoor condenser coil could also collect debris from the outside. You can easily find the condenser coil in your outdoor unit and check if it requires any maintenance.

Coil Fins

Aluminium fins over the evaporator and condenser coil can be bent easily. A tool called a “fin comb” is available to purchase. Your air conditioning technician can use this tool to make the coil fins go back to their original state.

Clean and Clear Drains

Once in a while, try passing a copper wire through the drain pipes of your system. If the drain is clogged, it will be challenging to reduce the humidity. High humidity levels on the inside can cause your walls and carpet to become discoloured.

Sealed Rooms For Better Cooling

For through the wall or window air conditioners, you should also inspect the seals around the unit.  Ensure that there are no gaps that can allow air in or out as this can cause moisture to collect, causing damage to the seals. Also any gaps can also allow unwanted insects to enter your property and also possible contaminants from the outside.

Winter Preparations

When the winter season is around the corner, cover your wall mounted indoor AC unit. Also, cover the outdoor unit with a plastic sheet or a cloth to prevent any dirt from getting in it.

Know When You Need Help

If you think that your unit requires an inspection by a professional, hire an A/C technician. The technician will help you with any problem in your air conditioning system.
